Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are an excellent cosmetic option for patients who want to improve their smiles. Here at Thiells Dentist - Michael Bleyzer, DDS, we offer many alternatives for those who want a more attractive smile and regain confidence when in social situations.

What are Veneers?

Veneers can be described as thin shells made of materials that can match the color of a patient’s natural teeth. They go over the tooth that needs to be corrected and are an excellent option that is relatively inexpensive compared to other cosmetic procedures.

Why Do I Need Veneers?

There are several reasons why you may need veneers for your front teeth. Among the most common ones are:
•  Discolored teeth
•  Teeth with uneven wear and tear
•  Chipped or cracked teeth
•  Misaligned or jagged teeth
•  Gaps between teeth

How are Veneers Made?

Veneers are usually made from porcelain or composite resin. The material used for your veneers will depend on your specific situation, and we can go over the benefits of both elements.

Getting Veneers

Getting veneers usually requires three trips to our office. The first one is a consultation in which we examine your tooth and determine that you need veneers. During this visit, we go over the procedure of getting the veneers and give you as much information as possible on how the procedure will go.

If you want to improve the look of your smile, we will discuss if veneers are the best option for you and you will let us know what your goals are. You may get x-rays at this time to see what condition your tooth is in.

During the second appointment, we usually take x-rays, if we haven’t made them during the consultation, and remove about one-half millimeter of your enamel to prepare the tooth for the placement of the veneer. Once the shaping is done, we will make an impression of your teeth and send it to the lab so that they can create your new veneer. It can take up to four weeks to get the veneer back.

At that time, we will bring you back to place the veneer and bond it to your teeth permanently. Before the final bonding, we will check for shape and color, which can still be adjusted at this time. We prepare the tooth for the final bonding process. Afterward, the tooth is polished to give it a natural sheen that matches your other teeth.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Veneers

Some of the most significant benefits of getting veneers are that it will improve the look of your smile and they can be made to match the natural color of the rest of your teeth. Porcelain veneers are resistant to stains and a good option to fix teeth with imperfections.

Disadvantages of getting veneers are that the process is permanent and more expensive than other procedures such as bonding. Teeth sensitivity can increase because of the amount of enamel that is removed to prepare the tooth for the veneers.

Veneers don’t protect from decay and are not a good option for patients who have decay or gum disease.
