Dentistry for Kids

Young girl brushing her teethWhen taking care of kids, it’s important to keep them comfortable, pain-free, and get them used to coming to see our dentist. The staff at Thiells Dentist - Michael Bleyzer, DDS works hard to make dentistry for kids a pleasant experience for every child.

The Challenges of Dentistry for Kids

Treating children can be challenging. One of the most challenging things is to keep them still for an extended time so that we can perform dental procedures. Kids don’t like to sit on a chair with dental tools in their mouths and can become afraid of us if they are not used to coming into the office.

To prevent this (and future tooth decay), the American Dental Association (ADA) recommends parents start bringing their children for periodic cleanings beginning when they turn one. Our staff will make the experience as fun as possible and also take the time to teach children about caring for their teeth.

Our dentists and hygienists are trained to treat patients of all ages, including children, and we are happy to get to know our youngest patients and watch them grow.

How to Keep Children Comfortable During a Dental Appointment

One of our top priorities is keeping children comfortable and relaxed during a dental appointment. Even when the child comes in for a cleaning and fluoride treatment, our dentist office can be intimidating. Parents play an essential role in making children comfortable ahead of time.

Your child’s oral health is a partnership. Teaching them how to brush their teeth properly from an early age can help them keep healthy teeth and gums. We will do professional cleanings periodically and explain to them how to care for their teeth.

There are several ways in which you can help us keep your kids comfortable during a dental visit including explaining:
•  What to expect. Explaining to children what to expect each step of the way is extremely important to make them feel comfortable at our office. Not knowing can make them anxious and nervous about the unknown.
•  Why going to the dentist is essential. The sooner children know about how important it is to take care of their teeth by brushing them after meals and flossing, the better. Many times, young children are afraid of us because of the tools we use, so it's essential you talk with them about how we will help them have a beautiful smile for life.
•  About dental procedures. If your child needs any kind of procedure, such as getting a cavity filled, try to explain to them what will happen once they come to their appointment. While it can be scary for kids, it's better to prepare them as much as possible. We will also tell them what we are doing at each stage to prevent anxiety.

You are more than welcome to accompany your child for as long as he or she needs you. Having mom or dad there with them helps to take away anxiety and fear.
