Ways of Managing the Effects of Bruxism

Posted on 6/30/2019 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Ways of Managing the Effects of BruxismBruxism or teeth grinding is a problem that many people don't realize until it causes some damage. This is because many people suffer from bruxism while they sleep. They are not aware that it happens. Before they know it, they are suffering from the effects of bruxism. Once this happens, they need to learn how to manage the things that bruxism caused.

Problems Associated with Bruxism

The amount of damage bruxism causes will vary. Some of the problems include jaw soreness and pain, TMJ, clicking or popping of the jaw, broken, chipped or cracked teeth, gum soreness, headaches insomnia and stress. Learning how to manage and treat these problems is as important as learning how to manage the bruxism.

Keys to Managing the Effects
The first thing to manage the effects of bruxism is to manage the bruxism. There are plenty of ways to treat bruxism that include tools to manage stress and anxiety, medications and appliances. These can lessen the bruxism or limit the impact that it has.

Once the bruxism is under control, it is possible to focus on managing the problems it created. Some of the problems will resolve on their own over time. If there are chipped, broken or loose teeth, there are several options we have such as veneers or dental implants. There are also treatment options that can help with jaw pain and TMJ. Exercises and even surgery are some of the solutions to that problem. The headaches may disappear once the bruxism is under control, but there are also medications that can help with that.

A good plan to manage the effect of bruxism is a holistic approach to both the bruxism and the problems related to the bruxism. By dealing with all the issues surrounding the bruxism, it is possible to get the most relief.
