Don't Fear a Root Canal

Posted on 10/5/2018 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Graphic of tooth with a heartFrom jokes in popular culture to urban legends, root canals are portrayed in a negative light. But in reality, root canals are actually performed to relieve pain and serious infections and tooth decay that can lead to permanent damage and even tooth loss in extreme cases. You may find it hard to believe, but the procedure for a root canal is actually comparable to having a cavity filled in terms of pain and discomfort. Our Rockland County, Stony Point and Pomona, NY dentist Dr. Michael Bleyzer, offers root canal therapy to help restore a damaged tooth.

Root Canal Therapy in Stony Point, NY

Scary root canal jokes may be fun and easy to tell, but remember that they are just that. The procedure is actually one of the best tools available for saving severely decayed or infected teeth from extraction.

What is a Root Canal and When is it Necessary?

Teeth contain a network of nerve tissue and blood vessels, also known as pulp. If bacteria reaches the pulp due to tooth decay or through a crack or chip in a tooth due to trauma or an accident, it can lead to pain, infection, and even permanent tissue damage if left untreated. During a root canal treatment, the dentist will remove any bacteria and damaged tissue from inside the tooth. Like with a filling, a local anesthetic is used to relieve pressure, pain or discomfort. Once the procedure is complete, the tooth is protected with a dental crown to strengthen the tooth. Once completed, your tooth will be like new.
