How can I tell my child has a cavity?

A cavity becomes painful in its later stages. Symptoms of a cavity also include:
- a white spot on the tooth
- a light brown spot on the tooth
- a hole in the tooth
- sensitivity to temperature
- problems chewing on that side of the mouth

Caring For Your Child’s Teeth

Giving your child the proper dental care begins at home. Instilling a sense of importance in the at-home oral care routine makes for good habits early on, which will eventually lead to good habits as your child grows and becomes an adult. As soon as you see your child’s first tooth erupt, begin brushing it with a soft toothbrush and a tiny amount of toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice). Children over the age of 3 can use a pea-sized amount of toothpaste. As the child’s teeth grow closer together, begin flossing them daily. Finally, ensure your child sees the dentist at least twice a year for regular dental examinations and cleanings to keep their teeth healthy. Regular dental visits also help catch dental issues early and prevent further complications.

Pediatric Dental Care in Stony Point, Rockland and Pomona, NY

Regular dental visits begin with a physical examination of the teeth, mouth, and oral tissues. A professional cleaning removes any bacteria, plaque and tartar which are on the teeth and prevents tooth decay and cavities. Your dentist will go over brushing and flossing techniques and is happy to answer any questions or concerns you have regarding your child’s oral health.
