Woman smiling with denturesIf you are missing most or all of your teeth, you could benefit from wearing dentures. However, did you know that dentures do more for your health than just replace your teeth? Learn more about dentures and what they can do for you with Dr. Michael V. Bleyzer, DDS at DenturesTheills Dentistry in Pomona, NY.

Types of Dentures

Full Dentures:

For patients missing all of their teeth, full dentures sit on the gum tissue to replace the entire arch of teeth. They rely on gravity or suction to stay in place and allow the wearer to enjoy the foods they love, avoiding complications from eating unhealthy or non-nutritious soft foods.

Partial Dentures:

Sometimes, patients have several remaining healthy teeth. In this case, a dental laboratory creates a partial denture around the healthy teeth. The denture fits over the remaining teeth, using them as an anchor to stay in place. Additionally, partial dentures prevent the remaining teeth from drifting to accommodate for the extra room on the mouth’s arch.

Immediate Dentures:

Some patients require extraction of their remaining teeth before wearing dentures. A dental laboratory creates immediate dentures based on a mold of the mouth taken prior to extraction. The patient wears the denture directly after their extraction appointment. However, since the denture accommodates for swelling of the extraction sites, most immediate dentures need adjustments after the mouth heals.

Implant-Supported Dentures:

Dental implants are one of the most permanent and effective ways to replace a missing tooth. Surgically implanted into the jawbone, implant-supported dentures require several implants placed throughout the mouth. The denture latches onto the implants, which holds it securely in place.

Dentures in Pomona, NY

Whether you are missing most or all of your teeth, dentures can help you get your smile back and feel confident about the way you look. This boost in self-esteem makes face-to-face interactions easier and more enjoyable and benefits mental health. Missing most or all of your teeth may result in having to eat soft or bland foods. Dentures allow patients to eat healthy, tasty foods without worrying about how to chew them. Finally, dentures fill out facial muscles sagging due to your missing teeth, providing a younger and more aesthetic facial appearance.
