For any recreational activity, it’s best to play it safe by wearing protective gear. Sports injuries occur all the time, and contact sports increase the chance for mouth injuries. Our mission is to protect patients’ smiles. At our dentist office in Ponoma, NY, we offer custom-made athletic mouthguards for patients who play contact sports.

If you choose not to wear a mouthguard, you put your teeth at risk. You can chip, break and lose a tooth during rough activities. Certain sports make mouthguards a part of the uniform, such as football, ice hockey, boxing and lacrosse—it’s a smart move.

Mouthguards come in different colors, sizes and types, and physically active patients need to make sure the piece will fit right. There are three types of mouthguards available to choose from.
- Stock mouthguard: A ready-made piece.
- “Boil-and-bite” mouthguard: Once boiled in hot water, the mouthpiece softens and can be molded to teeth.
- Custom-made mouthguard: Custom designed for your teeth.

Compared to stock and “boil-and-bite” mouthguards, professionals recommend custom-made mouthpieces. Individually designed mouthguards allow for easier breathing and placement. At Thiells Dentist, emergency dentistry, in Ponoma, NY, we make impressions of your teeth to create an exact mold of your mouth.

Mouthguards aren’t just for contact sports. We recommend you use a mouthpiece for any recreational sport that can cause a mouth injury.
