Root Canals are Nothing to Fear

Diagram of a toothWorried that you may need a root canal? Although root canals have a bad reputation, undergoing the procedure isn't much different than having a filling replaced. Dr. Michael Bleyzer, your Pomona, Stony Point and Rockland County, NY dentist, explains why root canals are nothing to fear.

Your comfort is your dentist's chief concern

Root canals may have been painful many years ago, but dentists today offer a variety of anesthetic options to ensure that you're pain-free during the procedure. Local anesthetic is very effective in blocking pain during a root canal procedure. If you're nervous about your root canal, your dentist can also offer several kinds of sedation that will help you feel calm and relaxed while he works.

Root canals help safeguard your health

Root canals are performed when the pulp inside a tooth becomes inflamed or infected. If the tooth isn't treated promptly, a painful abscess can develop. Eventually, bacteria from the abscess can travel throughout your body, causing serious illness and even death.

The root canal procedure is simple

After your Pomona, Stony Point and Rockland County dentist makes sure that your mouth is numb, he'll drill through your tooth to reach the inflamed pulp. He'll carefully remove the pulp and use tiny files to clean the root canals in your tooth. Small posts may be added to your teeth to provide extra stability and support the crown that may be added when the root canal is completed. After the posts are placed in the center of your tooth, your dentist will seal the area with gutta percha, a natural rubbery material.

In most cases, your root canal will be performed during two visits, as it's important to ensure that all of the infected pulp has been removed before the tooth is sealed. You may experience a little pain for the next few days or week after your root canal, although pain can often be relieved with over-the-counter pain medications.
