The Importance of Regular Dental Visits

Posted on 4/7/2016 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
A woman visiting the dentistMaking time for regular dental visits isn't always easy, but those twice yearly visits offer several benefits. Dr. Michael Bleyzer, your family dentist in the Pomona, Rockland County and Stony Point, NY areas, explains why regular dental visits are so important.

Tooth decay can be detected before you have symptoms

During your checkup, your dentist will examine your teeth and look for signs of cavities. At least, once per year, he'll use X-rays to spot issues that can't be detected with a visual examination. Treating cavities when they're small is an essential part of keeping your teeth healthy. Large cavities require large fillings, which can make teeth more fragile and prone to fracturing eventually. It's far better to spot cavities in the early stages when they can be treated with a tiny filling.

Cleanings remove plaque and tartar from your teeth

Have you ever run your tongue over your teeth and felt a sticky coating? That coating is plaque, a sticky, colorless film that contains bacteria that can cause cavities. Although you remove plaque every time you floss and brush your teeth, it can be difficult to remove it from every nook and cranny in your mouth.

Plaque eventually turns into a hard deposit called tartar if it isn't removed. When tartar forms around your gums, it can cause gum disease. Tartar can't be removed at home and can only be removed with a special dental tool. During regular dental visits, your mouth will be cleaned of plaque and tartar, decreasing your risk of developing painful cavities or gum disease.

Gum disease can be promptly identified and treated

Gum disease is not only painful, but can also lead to tooth loss. During your regular dental visit, your Pomona, Rockland County and Stony Point dentist will look for receding gums or pockets, areas of the gums that have pulled away from your teeth. If he spots any problems, he will recommend an appropriate treatment.

Health problems can be spotted during dental visits

Your dentist looks out for your general health, as well as your oral health during regular dental visits. He'll examine your mouth, tongue and jaw for signs of cancer and look for subtle signs that could indicate that you have a health problem. For example, bleeding gums can be a symptom of diabetes and eroded areas on the back of your teeth could indicate that you have a problem with acid reflux.

Regular dental visits help brighten your smile

Cleanings not only remove plaque and tartar, but also remove surface stains that can dull your teeth. After your visit, your smile will be brighter and your breath will be fresher.
