What Is Cosmetic Bonding?

Woman smiling with cosmetic bondingWould you like to improve the appearance of your teeth in just one visit? Cosmetic bonding offers a quick, easy way to correct flaws or damage. Our Rockland County, Stony Point and Pomona, NY, family dentist, Dr. Michael Bleyzer, shares some information about bonding.

Cosmetic bonding transforms teeth

During cosmetic bonding, small amounts of composite resin are added to your teeth to conceal imperfections and repair damage. Because composite resin is made of a combination of plastic and glass powder, it's very flexible and can be molded into any shape imaginable. Once the material is hardened with a curing light, it becomes just as tough and durable as your natural tooth enamel. Composite resin is tinted to match the most common tooth shades to ensure that the treated area isn't obvious.

Who can benefit from cosmetic bonding?

Cosmetic bonding is an excellent choice if you have noticeable flaws in your teeth, such as bumps, pits, depressions or cracks. Is cost a concern? Cosmetic bonding is less expensive than crowns or veneers, which can also be used to conceal common tooth imperfections. Crowns require removal of a significant amount of healthy tooth structure to ensure a good fit, while a thin layer of tooth enamel must be filed down when you wear veneers. Unlike these restorations, no changes to the structure of your teeth are needed when you choose cosmetic bonding.

Bonding is often used to replace damaged portions of your teeth. It's a good choice if you've experienced chips or breaks in your teeth and can sometimes be used to reattach a broken portion of a tooth. The procedure also lengthens short teeth and fills in small gaps between your teeth.

Every tooth is approximately the same shape and size in the ideal smile. Unfortunately, some of us don't have perfectly uniform teeth. Pointed, crooked, twisted and unusually shaped teeth can detract from your appearance. Luckily, bonding can totally transform problem teeth, giving you the smile you deserve. Although orthodontic treatment may be needed if teeth are very crooked, cosmetic bonding is very effective in correcting mild issues that don't affect your bite.
