Toothaches Are More Than a Nuisance

Posted on 12/22/2017 by Michael Bleyzer, DDS
Woman with a toothacheWhat is a toothache actually trying to tell you about your smile?

Sure, no one likes dealing with the pain and discomfort of a toothache. It’s amazing how quickly that pain can easily ruin your day and even make sleeping difficult. Of course, it’s important not to ignore this pain, as it’s your mouth’s way of trying to tell you that something is wrong. Our Pomona, Stony Point and Rockland County, NY, dentist Dr. Michael Bleyzer is here to tell you what might be going on and why you should come in right away for care if you experience a toothache.

Not only is having a toothache annoying, but also more often than not this pain won’t go away on its own (and will typically just get worse). Toothaches may be characterized as dull, throbbing, aching or sharp. The pain may be intermittent, continuous or may only show up when biting down or putting pressure on the tooth.

Here are the most common causes of a toothache:

Cavities

In many cases, if you are dealing with a toothache it’s because a cavity has a set in. Your mouth is full of bacteria that thrive on sugar and starches. Whenever you eat these foods the bacteria turns them into acid, which erodes healthy tooth enamel.

Over time, these acid attacks create holes in the enamel, also known as cavities. The only way to treat a full-blown cavity is to visit our Pomona, NY, general dentist to have the decay removed and to then place a dental filling to restore the tooth.

Dental Trauma

While teeth are very resilient and durable it doesn’t mean that injuries can’t still happen. Teeth can still chip, crack, fracture or even be dislodged or completely knocked out. Of course, the type of treatment you receive will depend on the extent of the injury. If it’s a minor crack or chip, we may be able to just buff it out and apply bonding resin to the tooth to restore it. In other cases, the tooth may need to be thoroughly prepped for a dental crown.

If your tooth has been knocked out then you need to come in immediately for care so that we can save the tooth. Some teeth can be saved if you come in within a half hour of the injury, so don’t delay!

An Abscess

Did you know that teeth can also fall victim to an infection? Unfortunately, this infection can reach the inside of the tooth and continue to spread to the roots. If left untreated the bacteria will destroy the root canals, causing both bone and tooth loss. This means the sooner that you seek treatment the better.

In most cases, we will need to perform root canal therapy to remove the infected pulp, clean out bacteria within the tooth and then apply a crown over the treated tooth to restore it.

Don’t ignore a toothache if it’s happening to you. The sooner you seek dental care the better. We are proud to provide the emergency dental care you need in Pomona, Rockland County and Stony Point, NY. Call us right away to end that toothache.
