Drawing of an extracted toothIf you can keep your natural teeth throughout your life, that’s fantastic, however, there are some reasons you may need a tooth extracted. Teeth are removed for a variety of reasons including pain, infection or fear a bad tooth may compromise healthy teeth. Teeth may also need to be removed even if they are healthy. Dr. Michael Bleyzer serving Stony Point, NY wants to share the times you may need a tooth extracted.

Dr. Bleyzer wants you to know about some common reasons to have a tooth extracted. You may need a tooth taken out if it is:
- Pushing or crowding the adjacent teeth
- Recommended for extraction by an orthodontist
- Severely decayed and can’t be restored with conventional dental treatment
- Still painful even after root canal therapy

If your tooth is badly decayed or infected, sometimes it can be saved with root canal therapy. Other times, it may need to be extracted because it can compromise the healthy teeth around it. Diseased teeth are a breeding ground for harmful bacteria that can destroy the hard and soft tissues of your mouth. Extracting a decayed or infected tooth will limit the spread of disease.

You may also need healthy teeth removed if you are having upcoming orthodontic treatment. Your orthodontist will recommend a tooth for extraction if it will hinder giving you a straight smile.

Your wisdom teeth (third molars) are another common reason for tooth extraction. You may need your wisdom teeth if:

You don’t have enough room for them
- They are crowding and pushing on other teeth, causing pain
- They are growing sideways (horizontally impacted)
- They are embedded in bone and won’t erupt (fully impacted)

Teeth are also extracted due to periodontal disease, which destroys the bone around your teeth. If enough bone is lost, your teeth can become mobile and not functional. These teeth are often removed and replaced with dental implants, bridgework or removable appliances to restore full chewing function.

Dental extractions can help the health and beauty of your smile and are nothing to fear. For more information about tooth extraction call Dr. Bleyzer in Stony Point, NY, serving the people of Pomona and Rockland County. Call today!
