Tooth pain may just seem like a nuisance, but it's more than that. Any kind of dental pain is warning you of a problem, whether it is an root canal infection, severe decay or gum disease. It's your job to visit your dentist in Rockland County, NY, Dr. Michael Bleyzer, when you are having these pains. If your pain is being caused by an infection, trauma or decay that is affecting the inner structures of the tooth a root canal will be your best option.

Why do I need a root canal?

A root canal is imperative if an infection, decay or trauma has affected the dental pulp. This is the only way to treat the irritated or inflamed pulp and prevent the spread of infection. Once decay or an infection has reached the pulp this is usually around the time most patients start to experience dental pain. The only way to get rid of the pain is by getting root canal therapy from your Rockland County restorative dentist.

What should I expect from my procedure?

Local anesthesia is applied to numb the area prior to treatment. It may take a bit longer for anesthesia to kick in if the dental pulp is inflamed but our goal is to make sure that you don't experience any discomfort during your procedure.

A dental dam will be placed over surrounding teeth, which will allow us to isolate the problem tooth and prevent bacteria from contaminating the area during treatment.

Then a small hole is drilled through the chewing surface of the tooth until we reach the pulp chamber. The pulp and tissue are removed and the pulp chamber is disinfected. Once the tooth is thoroughly cleaned we will use special material to seal up the canals so they don't experience further infection. Usually teeth that have been treated with root canal therapy will also require a dental crown to protect the tooth.

A root canal is necessary to preserve the rest of your tooth. You wouldn't want to deal with an extraction down the road. Before this happens turn to your general dentist in Rockland County to protect your smile. Call us right away!
